Taking into consideration, that a person can be ethically right but morally wrong (I.e., Politicians). How appropriate is it for us, as society, to classify people between good and bad because of their deeds? Just as Khan was taught by his mother.
I do not like to classify people, the word itself is a filter to judge. What we have in our mind are impressions about the society. Those impressions are transmitted and reproduced by society. Therefore, categories allow us to think, perceive, and interpret the world through different perspectives and points of view. But, when we talk about right and wrong, I think that our "right and wrong thinking" reflects our own cultural filters and the way we were taught (Matsumoto, 2009).

¨the word itself is a filter to judge¨, Aleja, wise words and you´re wright because what you seed in the present will be the picking in the future, I strongly believe that the good deeds or the bad deeds you carry out, show the life style you are having now and if you must be filter. It is not about any God, either the universe (they just do your things) is the day to day in life and how brave you are to face the world.
Bearing in mind Aleja’s point of view, I think that as a Society we always have a tendency to classify and point out what others do. As human beings, it seems normal to group people according to their acts. For us is easy to classify people who commits “inappropriate” acts into “bad people”. Nowadays, there are those who constantly do bad things, but, also are those who have done bad things because in some situation of life they were forced to do it. Therefore; I consider it inappropriate to establish those labels and classify people as bad or good according to their actions, because we do not know why people acts in a certain way and we are not allowed to judge the actions of the others.
I totally agree with you Aleja because our moral and ethic basis are different. Even though if we were grow up in the same place, there are differences between the moral principles that we have and it is because our families have taught us different things in different ways.
I personally think that the end does not justify the means, and many people have their 'hands dirty' because of the lack of self-control in different day by day situations; moral standards and beliefs have changed too much, so we all live in the modernity of being open-minded, tolerant and going with the flow, turning us into unhealthy societies. Khan was well taught by his mother, he knew it, so that is why he did all those excellent things along his life!
We also should consider that in the same way khan was taugh by his mother to do what we call " the right thing", many others are taught by their mothers and families to do ¨ the right thing¨. However, what they called ¨right¨ for us it is wrong, because our perspective is different, but how can we be sure that what we were taught is the right thing?
In our society the behavior could denotate if we are ethically or morally wrong. Thus, a specific action can show if we could be right or wrong according to the environment, scenarios and different social agents who influence to find out that concern. In this way, as a general society it might be seen that we can argue if something can be defined as right or wrong considering the established relationship among the community, the personal character and what we give special meaning to our culture to define good or bad deeds in social settings. From this point of view, Khan shows up he morality perspective in his daily life actions, and that might be what probably many of us make nowadays, living depends on our internal and individual personal compass.
Excellent comment Juanpa! We should live and let live. Besides, I think people receive moral calls and repentance makes us recognize what we did wrong, making us turn and move to the right path to reconnect our heart and brain.
In the movie, Khan's mom had a very sweet and lovable way to teach her son how to differentiate good and wrong. And maybe for her son, and his special condition it was a very useful way to understand how life worked. However, beyond the movie, is not appropiate to classify people between good and bad because of their deeds, because there is people in this world doing bad things for a good cause (as they can say) or on the contrary, there can be people in this world that has to do "bad" things for "good" reasons.
I completely agree with you my dear. Desperate situations can produce 'sailors without a compass on the high seas', on the other hand, there are people who are anxious judges, with false morals and hypocrites who have no moral; that kind of people are toxic and they massify others negatively to do wrong.
That makes sense dear Sara! You have showed up the different connotations that probably could have our actions in diverse situations and context. Thus, what can be consider real as a matter of fact, is that being right or morally wrong might be a stereotype depending on our cultural codes and the intentions that embody our deeds.
Sara, when reading this comment, I immediately thought of Machiavelli's well-known motto: "The end justifies the means". Well... if we consider every racist, segregationist, xenophobic, snobbish or any other type of intolerant deed in the movie, it seems to me that discrimination ends up being very machiavellian in that sense.
Classifying people as good and bad beacause of their deeds is not correct. Human beings make mistakes every single day but it does not determine they are good or bad people. It is worth highlighting that, What in a culture is considered correct, can be incorrect in other. It has to do with the discussion in class about cultural relativism, since good and bad deeds may vary depending on the context. However, Khan's mother tried to teach him that regardless the religion, beliefs, likes, humans beings are not very different as he thought. Say good and bad was the easiest way to explain people behaviour due to Khan's condition. From my point of view, we can define whether an action is accepted or not in a context, but we should not classify a person in a category.
Definitely you are wright my dear colleague, I mean regarding to the students, but, what about 10°, 11° graders and even adults who have the enough conscience to analyze what is correct and incorrect and still knowing this, they decided to act bad or take bad decisions. So, in this sense; is it possible to frame them into those who can do whatever they want just because of their backgrounds or because they are humans and make mistakes?
In the same line, it would be safe to assume that in this film there is a clear intention to justify the idiosincrasy of American citizens, to find a reason for their wrong actions. When talking about good and evil, it is imperative to reflect and go beyond the causes of what is unreasonable. I also believe that it is a must to move our thoughts away from harmful theories, so that there are not confusing and incoherent formulas.
I think this question is tricky, because it is very easy to judge someone by their actions but, I think that before judging if someone is doing something right or wrong, we need to go beyond their actions and consider what is happening to this person and why they're behaving in a certain way. As my classmates have said, the end does not justify the means.
Your contributions dear teachers allowed to see the vital need to figure out how important can be the fact to go profound about what carries out the actions and deeds in determined real situations. From this way, it is meaningful to acknowledge the different reasons and point out if the human kind could be morally right or wrong.
Ana, you point out something really important, which has been an issue through time. We usually focus on the action itself, leaving aside what is behind each action, as you memtioned, what is happening to the person. We as teachers are called to change this. We should know our students, their context, needs and background, in order to understand their behavior and actions. Finally, we can help our students in our teaching pratice to go beyond the deeds and understand others' behavior before judging.
If we think about what being a good educator means, we all want our students to grow up knowing the difference between good and evil, as well as understanding the value of good deeds. This is something that we as teachers must take into account, since we all have developed that capacity through experience and practice; dialogue and debate can help, since children and teenagers find themselves into very tricky situations in their families and at the school. Ana, in my humble opinion, a good way to do so is through stories and fables that provide clear examples of what bieing a good citizen entails.
Regarding the starting question, classification is a way to justify stereotypes. We have learnt, by means of the course’s contents, stereotypes are only a way to judge people according to what we have been told. I agree with Ana when she says that that is a tricky question, due to I consider classification is not a healthy exercise for current societies, but we classify people because of their actions, anyway. For instance, in our classrooms as teachers, sometimes we segregate our students because of their actions and assignment responsibility. In that way, teachers tend to be stricter with the ones who are “bad” students than with the “good” ones, and we start reinforcing the idea of Khan’s mother. Personally, I consider this is a behavior we have to avoid, as Ana pointed out, it is mandatory to go beyond and propose solutions as ‘moral agents” (Campbell, 2003).
I also agree with Juan Pablo when he states that it is also important to consider the social background a “good” or “bad” person is immersed in. Here, it takes special relevance the concept of cultural relativism. In that way, religions are tools to teach specific behaviors to humans. We may accept and use the ones from all the religions in the world that may make us better human beings and better professionals, too.
I recall your intervention when you exemplified a possible way to find out classifications inside our classrooms environments. Because it has been acknowledged that many of us as teachers have no been aware about the stereotypes we label there, maybe because sometimes we could think that these sorts of social or cultural problems might appear in different macro context. That is why, the class should be consider as the best place to avoid those issues and there we have the choice to sow good actions or at least, a chance to reflect about what could be wrong or right according with our student´s experiences.
I do not like to classify people based on the first impressions I have from them, just as the saying says: do not judge a book by its cover. However, I think we, as society, must judge people for their bad actions in order to keep the peace; the reason we have the constitution, the judicial system, law courts, prosecuting attorneys, policemen, etc. is to stop bad people and make them pay for the bad deeds they do. We, in Colombia, have all those judicial entities that are in charge of judging bad acts and yet, they are perpetrated everyday as we can watch in the news. Now, how would this country be if we did not have a judicial system? It would be much worse than it is already. So yes, I think it is appropriate for us, as society, to classify people between good and bad and judge them because of their deeds.
You're right, Yeison, and now I highly agree with you. People should be judged because of their bad deeds. If we just ignore those actions, we couldn't expect a better future. Thus, only to the extent that people understand that every bad action and behavior are penalized, they will correct them. Now my question is, under what circumstances would a person be considered as bad or good?
I totally agree. Sadly, a lot of times people are judged or condemned innocently either because of the hatred of some or because of racism and the intolerance of others. The idea would be to have just laws, just and not corrupt judges and lawyers and also constitutions, ethics and values that point to equality and dignity and not the crushing of others.

I agree with your point about the judicial system. Our society needs the law to judge in order to maintain the order . I associated with traffic lights because they indicate us when to continue or when to stop driving.
It is inappropriate to point people into good or bad, because of their actions, it is still relative, the actions which are good for someone, it could be bad for the others, although there are some of this behavior which definitely must be punish like to kill someone under any circumstance or to steal others belongings, etc. we can see here classification of people, but having a good reason to do it, from my point of view; on the other hand, I totally agree with the life lesson Khan received from his mom, in the world exists good and bad people, definitely yes, the issue is that we are afraid to point those who do wrong almost all the time and the worst is that kind of people know they are acting so bad but they do not care, because we do not do anything a bout it.
Khan understood about good and bad people. He knew he was a good Indian Muslim Man. He treated all people with respect and goodness. He did not permit his heart and thoughts to be affected with hate or resentment. Some people may say he was that way because of his autism, but personally I think he was a good man because he learned from his mother who was a a good woman, a good mother, a good person. she wanted to give those values to her him. Khan was full of love and humanity, he wanted to bring hope to all his people who were in dispair because of discrimination, hate and stereotyping his people was exposed to in America and the world because of what happened on Sep 11 in new York.He was a good man who worked hard to show the world that being a Muslim does not mean hatred or death. He gave a message of peace, tolerance and love to the world, inviting everyone to unity and respect for differences.
We teachers are invited to talk and to discuss on values, racism, stereotyping, respect, tolerances and inclusion for all with the students, so that we decrease bullying and hate, doing our best to start a change and a better world from schools and classrooms.
Pretty sure Jorge. Schools are saltavion places! A society change starts inside classrooms, which are in several cases, the whole world of the students. That is why school life becomes a memorable and an unforgettable part that sets an important path of our life.
I agree with you, Caro and Jorge. As teachers we have to search for some tools that help us to teach the importance of equality. Sometimes, we forget that we are instructors and we can guide our students toward a peacefull enviroment where they can underestand and respect the differences among them. The education is the way to change the steriotypes allowing the students for making individual actions that will make a diference in collective actions and in the society.

After reading the reactions on some of your remarks, there are some more question that rise to me, and those are: is it possible to classify people just because of their ways of act? What does it imply to classify people? Are people classifiable indeed? From my viewpoint, we cannot catalogue one individual taking only into consideration their actings since people are entities who comprise way beyond that. It is considered that a human being gets the status of a 'person' when carries a set of needs, goals, responsabilities, dignity and behavior. If classifying people into good or bad only because of their deeds were a way out, why do criminals still deserve their rights and a decent treatment? That is why I think that Khan's mother's advices were more about a discriminatory labeling practice and steretyping than an ethical prevention.
